You may have read about my problems trying to get linux 2.6.0-test4 to go: [Spotted in Michael Lucas-Smith>http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/userblogs/mls/blogView?showComments=true&entry=3239897396]. Well I'm a bit more persistent than I wanted to be.
I discovered to my dismay that dpkg -i of the new kernel was not updating the symbolic links which lilo uses to point to the new kernel. Why? NFI - but once I fixed that suddenly my kernel with everything conceiveable built in actually worked!
Almost! - it seems that many USB drivers simply don't auto-install themselves.. like.. say.. my keyboard and mouse. I had to pull out the old keyboard just to load up those modules. Sound didn't work - I also had to install devfsd so that programs expecting legacy device names could work. And to top it off, I couldn't open a virtual terminal due to a lack of devpts.. which I can't seem to find in the compile options.
So just as I'm now closer on the hunt to getting a working 2.6.0-test4 kernel, I get a message from my friend David saying he's reverted back to 2.4! - He said he couldn't get his new USB printer to work in 2.6, but it detected fine in 2.4. Well, it is a test kernel.. we are asking for trouble jumping in so quickly :)
