You may or may not have heard about the testing version of Linux's next release, 2.6. If you have and your linuxy geekily inclined, you may have tried to use it. You may have even been successful. On the same day my friend David and I tried to install it.

Immediately we discovered that Debian, again, rocks. We were already both up to date with all the requisite libraries and binutils, etc. But then things started to get a little weird!

Yes, weird. David used make gconfig - the Gnome version of the config program and I used make xconfig - the QT (KDE) version of the config program. Our default settings were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!.

Umpteenth reboots later I still don't have a working 2.6.0-test4, where as David's worked straight away. My kernel refuses to find device 3,1.. which is the first partition of the first hard drive. This is insane. I've compiled in all forms of IDE and ext2 support I could find in the set up program.. it's beginning to feel like maybe xconfig was a bad choice and isn't showing what gconfig does!

I could start again from scratch with a clean untaring.. but.. I've wasted enough time on it already. In the bin! I'll stick with 2.4.x until Debian has an official release of 2.6
