The Canberra Java Users Group invited somebody from my company to come along to their presentation they were having. They were presenting the latest and greatest of Java on MacOSX. My thoughts - nearly any *UG you go to you're going to run in to peoples mindsets.. not the people, their mindsets. This can be quite funny. As they demonstrated the new launcher bar that mac has one solaris person stated that it was a waste of CPU. My immediate thought was this: what else are you going to use that CPU time for? cracking NP problems? searching for aliens? running a database? - this was a laptop!. Second thought - I think MacOSX is very cool and the next computer I buy may be a mac because of it. Third thought - Java is a commodity these days, like C or C++.. there's no market place advantage to using it if you have something that does have a market place advantage. (The one in my pocket is Smalltalk).
All in all, it was a lot of fun - better than CLUG (Canberra Linux *UG), as they had free beer. They also brought pizza's in during the talk instead of afterwards. I'm getting a bit sick of pizza though, I've had far too much of it.
